Carbost is a village on the west of the Isle of Skye and is situated on the banks of Loch Harport which is tidal. The village is best known as the home of the Talisker Distillery which produces the internationally famous Talisker single malt Scotch whisky. To the east of the village lies the Cuillin Mountains one of the most spectacular mountain ranges in the UK.

The weather station is just outside the village 52m above the level of the Loch and is a Davis VP2 wireless instrument. The station has been operating since early February 2005, so comparative data with past weather conditions is limited at the moment.

At the moment the website data is updated approx. every hour.

I have included some photographs of different parts of the island on this website.

Cuillins covered in snow - February
The weather on Skye is varied and is characterized by a higher proportion of rain and stronger winds than many other parts of the UK. Low pressure systems tend to move rapidly across the island and the weather can change rapidly from hour to hour and indeed local conditions can vary significantly over different parts of the island. With regard to the situation at Carbost it is possible to discern the effects of the mountains on the local weather but more important is the warming effect of the Gulf Stream which means that the extremely low temperatures experienced in the Highlands are normally not experienced here.

Weather data is now available on this website from Staffin, one of the largest well established townships on Skye. Staffin is on the north east coast of the island some 30 miles from Carbost.

This weather station is a Rainwise Mark II and was set up early in July 2006 so  historical data is limited at present from this location. The station is situated some 62m above sea level very near the east coast and is to some extent sheltered from the predominant westerlies by the high escarpment of the Trotternish peninsular.

This station will be able to give some useful comparative weather data from a different part of the island from the Carbost site and should demonstrate how much local weather can vary across a relatively small area because of differences in topography.
